![]() Turgidity of the tubers depends on tuber hydration status. Role of Tuber Turgidity: Dehydrated tubers are more susceptible to blackspot bruise (Figure 2A). It has also been proposed that the intensity of the dark color is proportional to the number of cells damaged and smaller cell size. Second is the biochemical potential to synthesize blackspot pigments which depend on the polyphenol oxidase enzyme (PPO) and its substrate (tyrosine) levels. First is a separation of substrate and enzyme within the cells. However, different cultivars with the same specific gravity may exhibit different levels of susceptibility which is determined by two tuber qualities. Higher specific gravity tubers contain larger starch granules which account for damage potential to cell membranes with mechanical impact. Role of Dry Matter and Specific Gravity: Blackspot bruising potential is high in tubers with high dry matter content (specific gravity). Cultivars respond differently to calcium application as they differ in uptake and accumulation. Bruise incidence is minimized at 250ppm of tuber calcium concentration. Role of Calcium: Enhancing tuber calcium concentration may reduce the incidence of blackspot bruise. Excess application of nitrogen is also associated with reduced dry matter. Role of Nitrogen: Excess nitrogen and late application causes a delay in vine maturity and increases the tubers’ blackspot bruise susceptibility. Increasing potassium uptake may provide drought tolerance. However, this effect is primarily observed in fields with potassium deficiency. Additional potassium fertilizer decreases the tuber dry matter content due to increased water uptake. Role of Potassium: There is a significant relationship between reduction in susceptibility to blackspot bruise with an increasing rate of application of potassium fertilizer. Blackening in the impact zone of the tuber is the main reason for the rejection of the crop by consumers and the processing industry resulting in considerable economic losses. It takes 24 to 48 hours after an impact in the damaged area of the tuber to change color.īlackspot is cosmetically undesirable because of discoloration. Blackspot is formed close to the vascular ring and generally at the stem end because of the melanin pigment formation when polyphenolic compounds are oxidized by the polyphenolic oxidase (PPO) enzyme during cell wall rupture with a mechanical impact (Figure 1). Blackspot bruise is difficult to detect in intact tubers without peeling as the skin is not damaged. It can significantly reduce tuber quality. Split release with Grave Mistake Records.Blackspot is a widespread type of impact damage in potato tubers caused by mechanical stress during harvest and handling. ![]() The release also features an eight page booklet consisting of liner notes from the band, as well as an assortment of anecdotes and recollections from various friends, journalists, and musical peers reflecting on these formative years of Tenement's career. All of the material has been remastered by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory for one cohesive and superb sounding anthology. "Bruised Music, Volume One" compiles a total of ten tracks, taken from the Tenement Sucks tape, Dead Broke and Dirt Cult Records mixtape compilations, split w/ Used Kids, split w/ Friendly Fire, False Teeth 7", and Icepick 7". "Bruised Music, Volume One" isn’t just for the super-fan looking for a peek into Tenement’s early years and the honing of their razor sharp song-craft, it also offers new listeners a great introduction to the band’s perfect blend of raw punk energy and undeniable pop hooks. The period of time represented in this collection is a period of growing pains that paved the way for them to become the band that they are today, and the band that they will be many years from now. However, this comparison might seem lazy when you keep in mind that the members of Tenement had long schooled themselves on everything from The Beatles to Big Star, Sun Ra, Coltrane, Black Flag, Husker Du obscure hardcore punk to Brill Building pop music and all points in between. ![]() The influence of 80's punk is strong in the bulk of the material on "Bruised Music", likening the feeling of the Descendents or The Replacements. These recordings have been compiled here on "Bruised Music, Volume One," which covers Tenement's output on record between the years 2006 to 2009. Tenement began in 2006 with a series of loose demo recordings and singles that married the genres of "Pop" and "Punk" without being explicitly "Pop Punk" and to many, represented the power and urgency of hardcore without actually conforming to the genre itself.
